파리의 "음악의 승리" 시상식에서 "1997년의 올해의 연주자"로 선정된 스위스 출신의 프랑스 출신의 엠마누엘 파후드는 오늘날 가장 매력적이고 뛰어난 플루티스트이다. 1970년 스위스의 제네바에서 태어난 파후드는 여섯 살이 되던 해에 음악을 시작했다. 1990년 파리 고등음악원을 수석으로 졸업한 파후드는, 그 후 오렐 니꼴레를 사사하였다.
국제무대의 주요 콩쿠르에서 여러 차례 최고상을 수상해 온 파후드는 1992년 제네바 국제 음악 콩쿠르, 1989년 고베, 1988년 두이노 등 12개의 주요 국제 콩쿠르 중 8개를 석권했다. 그는 스위스의 프랑스어권 커뮤니티 라디오 시상식에서 독주자 상과 유럽의회의 유벤투스 상을 수상하였으며, 예후디 메뉴인 재단과 유네스코의 국제 음악인 후원회의 수혜를 받기도 하였다.
스물 두 살의 나이에, 클라우디오 아바도가 지휘하는 베를린 필하모닉 오케스트라의 수석 플루티스트로 임명되었던 엠마누엘 파후드는 2002년 4월, 20개월간의 휴식을 마치고 오케스트라에 컴백했다.
유럽, 미국, 극동 등지의 세계적인 주요 페스티벌에서 정기적으로 연주해 오고 있는 파후드는, 2002년 여름에만도 콜마르, 루체른, 잘츠부르크 페스티벌에 솔로이스트로 참가하였다.파후드는 2001/2002 시즌동안, 아바도가 지휘하는 베를린 필하모닉, 볼티모어 심포니, 런던 필하모닉, 취리히 톤할레, 스위스 로망드, 로쉬데스벤스키 지휘의 몬테-카를로 필하모닉, 마젤 지휘의 베이리쉬 룬트푼크, NHK 심포니, 베를리너 바로크 솔로이스츠, 비엔나 라디오 심포니 오케스트라, 벨기에 국립 오케스트라, 호그우드 지휘의 라디오 프랑스 필하모니크, 대니쉬 라디오 심포니, 카네기홀 데뷔 연주를 포함한 미국투어를 한 바르셀로나 심포니 오케스트라 등과 협연하였으며, 게르기에프 지휘의 마린스키 오케스트라, 잘츠부르크 모차르테움, 친만 지휘의 취리히 톤할레, 미네소타, 펄만 지휘의 워싱턴 네셔널 심포니, 필라델피아 챔버 오케스트라, 하딩 지휘의 도이치 캄머필하모니, 피셔 지휘의 부다페스트 페스티벌 오케스트라와의 일본 투어, 베를리너 바르톡 솔로이스츠, 호주 챔버 오케스트라와의 호주 투어 등의 협연 일정을 소화해내었다.
피아니스트 에릭 르 사쥬, 스테판 코바셰비치 등과 유럽, 북미, 일본 등에서의 활발한 리사이틀, 바이올리니스트 크리스토프 포펜 (Christoph Poppen), 비올리스트 하리올프 슐리히티히 (Hariolf Sclichtig), 그리고 첼리스트 쟝 귀엔 퀘이라스 (Jean-Guihen Queyras)와 함께하는 챔버무대도 많은 시간을 할애하고있다. 또한 그는 엘렌 그뤼모, 에릭 르 사쥬와 함께 하는 리사이틀, 뛰어난 관악주자들과 피아니스트 에릭 르 사쥬가 의기투합하여 만든 챔버 앙상블 Les Vents Francais, 재즈 피아니스트 재키 테라슨과 (이와 더불어 파후드는 재키 테라슨과 "Into the Blue"라는 제목의 음반출시 했다.)과 연주하는 등 다양한 분야에서 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있는 연주자이다.

Named "Instrumentalist of the Year 1997" at the prestigious Victoires de la Musique award ceremony in Paris, the Swiss-French flautist Emmanuel Pahud is one of today’s most exciting and adventurous musicians. He was born in Geneva in January 1970 and started to study music at the age of six. He graduated in 1990 with the Premier Prix from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, after which he continued his studies with Aurèle Nicolet.
He has won first prize in many major International Music Competitions like Kobe in 1989 and Duino in 1988, then won eight out of the twelve special prizes at the Concours de Genève in 1992. He took the Soloists Prize in the World-wide French-speaking Community Radio Awards, and the European Council’s Juventus Prize. He is also a laureate of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation and of the International Tribune for Musicians of UNESCO.
At the age of 22, Emmanuel Pahud was appointed Principal Flute of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Claudio Abbado, a post to which he returned in 2002 after an 18-month off-period when he taught the Virtuosity Class at the Geneva Conservatoire.
Emmanuel appears regularly at leading festivals throughout Europe, the USA and the Far East. He has appeared as soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Zurich Tonhalle, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Danish Radio, Philharmonique de Radio France, Mariinski, Minnesota Symphony, Camerata Salzburg, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, Washington National Symphony, NHK Symphony, Australian Chamber and Scottish Chamber orchestras. He’s collaborated with conductors such as Abbado, Rattle, Zinman, Maazel, Gergiev, Gardiner, Harding, Järvi, Pinnock, Jordan, Rostropovich or Perlman. Over the next season Emmanuel will be performing with the Orchestre Philharmonique de France, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Camerata Salzburg, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, a European tour with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Baroque Soloists.
Emmanuel Pahud is also a dedicated chamber musician. He has recently toured Europe, North America and Japan in recital with pianists Eric Le Sage, Yefim Bronfman and Hélène Grimaud, as well as jazzing with Jacky Terrasson. Highlights of the coming season include a Japanese tour with Les Vents Français, a European recital tour with Hélène Grimaud and recitals in the US with Yefim Bronfman. He has been chosen as “Artiste Étoile” for the 2006 Lucerne Festival and over the next two seasons will be premiering new flute concertos by Matthias Pintscher, Michael Jarrell and Marc-André Dalbavie.
Emmanuel Pahud's discography has earned him many awards, including several TV-Victoires de la Musique, Diapason d’Or, Radio France’s “Recording of the Year”, several Fono-Forum and TV-Echo awards in Germany, “Record Geijutsu” or “Ongaku no Tomo” award from the Japanese record industry. In 1996 he signed an exclusive solo recording contract with EMI. His discs have all been released to unanimous critical acclaim ("I haven't heard a flautist on disc that I like as much as Pahud" - American Record Guide; "surpassing any previous recordings of the Mozart quartets"- BBC Music Magazine; "this signals the arrival of a new master flautist" - The Guardian; "don't miss any of Pahud's recordings!" – Diapason), and Pahud’s collaboration with EMI is set to be one of the most significant contributions to recorded flute music. His most recent releases are a disc with Katchaturian and Ibert’s flute concertos (Zurich Tonhalle with Zinman), a recital disc with harpist Mariko Anraku, and his Franck, Widor and R. Strauss sonatas with Eric Le sage has been out since the autumn of 2004. In June 2005 he recorded Vivaldi concertos with the Australian Chamber Orchestra which is due out in spring 2006.
