다쑨 장, 더블베이스
2007년 더블베이스 주자로서는 두 번째로 미국 최고 권위의 에이버리 피셔 커리어 그랜트 상을 받은 다쑨 장은 2008년 앙상블 디토에 참여하며 한국 관객에게 처음으로 소개되었다.
다쑨 장은 첼리스트 요요 마의 실크로드 프로젝트 단원으로 맹활약하며 시카고 심포니 오케스트라 공연, 뉴욕 카네기 홀, 캘리포니아, 일본에서도 함께 연주했고 요요 마가 예술감독으로 참여한 일본 NHK의 10부작 다큐멘터리 음악을 함께 연주했다. 이는 소니를 통해 음반으로 제작되어 “실크로드 여정: 지평선을 넘어서(Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon)”란 타이틀로 발매되었다.
협연자로서 미네소타, 퍼시픽 심포니, 몬로 심포니, 그랜드 래피즈 심포니, 트라이앵글 체임버 오케스트라, 시더 래피즈 심포니 오케스트라 등 미국 각지 최고 오케스트라와 협연한 바 있으며 2006년에는 ‘재즈 앳 링컨센터 로즈 홀’ 시리즈에 참여, 키스 록하트 지휘 아래 세인트 루크 오케스트라와 비제의 카르멘 판타지를 연주했다. 이 외 보스턴의 이자벨라 스튜어트 가드너 박물관, 크래비스 문화회관, 조지아 대학교, 미주리 주립대, 워싱턴 DC 중국 대사관 등에서 독주회를 펼쳤고 또한 라 욜라 뮤직 소사이어티의 ‘섬머페스트’와 신시내티 린턴 실내악 시리즈, 스트링스 인 더 마운테인즈 음악제, 밴쿠버 실내악 축제에 실내악 주자로 참여하였다.
더블베이스 연주자로서는 최초로 뉴욕 영 콘서트 아티스트(YCA) 국제 오디션에 입상한 다쑨 장은 이후 YCA와 매니지먼트 계약을 맺고 왕성한 활동을 시작했으며. 이어 클레어 토우 상(Claire Tow Prize) 수상으로 뉴욕 데뷔 독주회를, 워싱턴 공연예술 협회상(Washington Performing Arts Society Prize) 수상으로 워싱턴 DC 데뷔 독주회를 열었다. 이어 라 욜라 뮤직 소사이어티 상(La Jolla Music Society Prize), 오케스트라 뉴 잉글랜드 솔로이스트 상(Orchestra New England Soloist Prize), 퍼거스 상(The Fergus Prize)을 수상한 바 있다. 2003년에는 더블베이스 주자 최초로 미네소타 심포니 오케스트라 여성 단체(WAMSO) 콩쿠르 1위를 차지했으며 2001년에는 국제 베이시스트 협회 솔로 콩쿠르에서 최연소 수상, 2002년에는 미국 현악기 교사협회 국립 솔로 콩쿠르에서 대상을 차지하였다.
다쑨 장은 중국 하얼빈의 베이스 연주자 가정에서 성장했으며, 9세에 베이스를 시작해 11세 때 베이징의 중앙 음악원에서 본격적인 음악공부를 시작했다. 이후 미국 인터로켄 예술학교로 진학하였고 인디애나 음악대학에서는 로렌스 허스트를 사사하며 전문 연주자 과정을 마쳤다. 다쑨 장은 미국 일리노이 주 노스웨스턴 대학에서 학생들을 가르치다 현재는 오스틴의 텍사스 주립대에서 교수직을 맡고 있다.
2008년 겨울 시카고 심포니 홀에서 피아니스트 랑랑과 실내악 콘서트를 가졌으며 2009년 워싱턴 DC에서는 요요 마와 오바마 대통령 취임 축하연에서 연주했다. 링컨센터 체임버 뮤직 소사이어티 연주에서도 활발히 활동한 바 있다. 2011년 디토 페스티벌에 다시 참여할 예정이다.
DaXun Zhang, Double Bass
“If the bass is finally to produce a headliner, the instrument can have no better champion,” wrote The Washington Post of double bassist DAXUN ZHANG, who has indeed made his mark as a soloist on this unusual instrument.
In April 2007, Mr. Zhang won an Avery Fisher Career Grant, only the second double bassist in the history of this prestigious award. In the summer of 2008 he returns to the Music@Menlo Festival in California and tours Korea with the chamber ensemble DITTO, including a concert at the Seoul Arts Center. During the 2008-2009 season, Mr. Zhang continues his residency with Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Two. He also performs as soloist with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and gives recitals at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CA), Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts at Jordan Hall in Boston, Buffalo Chamber Music Society, Maple Ridge Music Society (Canada), Loyola University New Orleans and Vancouver Recital Society. He performs a unique duo recital with pipa player Yang Wei at Fox Hill Village (MA) and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.
Mr. Zhang has performed extensively with the Silk Road Project, including concerts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, at Carnegie Hall, and in Japan and California. He recorded the soundtrack to a 10-part documentary series with the Silk Road Project and its Artistic Director, Yo-Yo Ma, which aired in Japan on NHK Television. The CD was released as “Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon” on Sony Classical. He has also joined with fellow Silk Road musician and pipa player Yang Wei and pianist Tomoko Kashiwagi to form the innovative chamber ensemble Qi Lin.
As concerto soloist, Mr. Zhang has appeared with orchestras including Orange County’s Pacific Symphony, the Monroe Symphony Orchestra, the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle and the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra. He has given recitals at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, the University of Georgia, Missouri State University, and at the Chinese Embassy in the Embassy Series in Washington, DC. He has also performed chamber music at the La Jolla Music Society’s Summerfest, the Linton Chamber Music Series in Cincinnati, the Strings in the Mountains Music Festival and the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival.
DaXun Zhang is the first double bass player to win the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and start a career under the auspices of Young Concert Artists. He made his New York debut sponsored by the Claire Tow Prize and his Washington, DC debut as a co-presentation with Washington Performing Arts Society. He also won the La Jolla Music Society Prize, the Orchestra New England Soloist Prize, and The Fergus Prize. In April 2006, Mr. Zhang performed Bizet’s Carmen Fantasy in at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall with Keith Lockhart conducting the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.
DaXun Zhang comes from a family of bassists in Harbin, China. He has been playing the instrument since the age of nine, and studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing beginning at the age of eleven. He continued his studies in the U.S. at the Interlochen Arts Academy and received his Bachelor of Music at the Indiana University School of Music, where he worked with Lawrence Hurst. He has served on the faculty of Northwestern University and was recently appointed Assistant Professor of Double Bass at the University of Texas at Austin.
Mr. Zhang was the first double bassist ever to win First Prize in the 2003 WAMSO (Women's Auxiliary of the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra) competition, leading to a performance with the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra with Osmo Vanska, conducting. In 2001, Mr. Zhang was the youngest artist ever to win the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition. He has also received the Grand Prize of the American String Teachers Association National Solo Competition.
