고티에 카퓌송은 그라모폰이 ‘첼로 계의 떠오르는 샛별’이라고 칭할 만큼 촉망 받는 첼리스트이다. 1981년 프랑스 샹베리에서 태어난 그는 5세 때 첼로를 시작하고 1999년 파리국립고등음악원에 입학했으며, 그 해에 모리스 라벨 뮤직 아카데미와 앙드레 나바라 콩쿠르에서 1위를 차지했다. 이듬해에는 파리국립고등음악원의 첼로와 실내악 콩쿠르 1위에 입상했으며, 빈의 하인리히 쉬프 마스터클래스에도 참석했다. 2001년 프랑스의 가장 권위 있는 음악상인 <Victoires de la Musique(음악의 승리)>가 그를 올해의 신인으로 지목했으며, 2004년에는 <Borletti-Buitoni Trust 보를레티-부이토니 트러스트(http://www.bbtrust.com)> 로부터 상을 받아 가장 주목 받는 젊은 첼리스트로서의 면모를 갖춰가고 있다.
1997/98년, 그는 <유러피안 커뮤니티 유스 오케스트라>와 <말러 유겐트 오케스트라> 멤버로서 버나드 하이팅크, 켄트 나가노, 피에르 불레즈, 다니엘 가티, 세이지 오자와, 클라우디오 아바도 등과 함께 연주했다. 또한 솔리스트로서 유럽 체임버 오케스트라와 로마 산타 체칠리아 오케스트라(정명훈 지휘), 필라델피아 오케스트라(크리스토프 에센바흐 지휘), 파리 앙상블 오케스트라(존 넬슨 지휘), 몬테카를로 필하모닉 오케스트라(아르맹 조르당 지휘)와 협연 무대에 올랐다.
최근의 그의 행보는 더욱 대단하다. 뮌헨 필하모닉(파보 예르비 지휘)협연과 프랑스 국립 오케스트라, 드레스덴 필하모닉 협연, 스코티쉬 체임버 오케스트라와의 투어, 평론가들의 극찬 속에 형 르노 카퓌송과 함께한 전미 투어가 있으며, 2008년 2월에는 내셔널 심포니 오케스트라(레너드 슬랫킨 지휘) 협연으로 워싱턴 DC 데뷔도 성공리에 마쳤다.
뛰어난 실내악 연주자로도 인정 받는 고티에 카퓌송은 최근 카티아 라베크(피아노), 빅토리아 뮬로바(바이올린)과 함께 이탈리아 투어를 성공리에 마쳤다. 이보다 앞서 2005년 1월에는 마르타 아르헤리치와 일본 투어를 했다. 뿐만 아니라 다니엘 바렌보임, 유리 바쉬메트, 제라르 코세, 정명훈, 엘렌 그리모, 스티븐 코바세비치, 장-이브 티보데, 릴리아 질버스타인, 이자이 4중주단 등 명성 높은 연주자들과 함께 지속적으로 실내악 무대에 섰다. 또한 형 르노 카퓌송은 그와 가장 가까운 음악 동료이기도 하다.
버진 클래식스의 주요 아티스트로서 그의 레코딩 또한 주목할 만 하다. <하이든 첼로 협주곡(다니엘 하딩 지휘, 말러 체임버 오케스트라)>와 르노 카퓌송, 피아니스트 니콜라스 안겔리치와 함께 한 브람스 작품들, <브람스 더블 콘첼토(정명훈 지휘, 말러 유겐트 오케스트라)/브람스 클라리넷 5중주>, <라벨 3중주 소나타>, <슈베르트 송어 5중주>, <Face à face>, <인벤션>등이 대표작이다. 2008년 1월에는 피아니스트 가브리엘라 몬테로와 함께 <프로코피예프 & 라흐마니노프 소나타>를 출시했다.
고티에 카퓌송은 1701년산 Matteo Goffriler를 사용하고 있으며, BSI 은행이 대여해 준 1746년산 Joseph Contreras도 같이 연주하고 있다.
One of the world's leading young cellists, Gautier Capuçon was born in Chambéry in 1981 and began playing the cello at the age of five. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and in 1999 won both the first prize of the Maurice Ravel Music Academy of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the André Navarra Competition in Toulouse. The following year he was awarded the Paris Conservatoire's Cello and Chamber Music Prize and has since attended Heinrich Schiff's masterclasses in Vienna. In 2001 the Victoires de la Musique, France's top music awards, named him New Talent of the Year and in 2004 he received an award from Borletti-Buitoni Trust.
As a member of the European Community Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester he performed in 1997/98 under conductors such as Haitink, Nagano, Boulez, Gatti, Ozawa and Abbado. As a soloist he has now played with, among others, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Santa Cecilia Orchestra Rome under Myung-Whun Chung, the Philadelphia Orchestra under Charles Dutoit, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Hans Graf, the Orchestre de Paris under Christoph Eschenbach, the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris under John Nelson and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo under the late Armin Jordan. Recent highlights have included performances with the Munich Philharmonic under Paavo Järvi and appearances with Camerata Athens and Sir Neville Marriner, the Orchestre de Bordeaux and Louis Langrée, the Orchestre de Lyon, Orchestre National de France and Dresden Philharmonie and tours with the the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, the New Zealand Symphony and – in China – the Orchestre de Strasbourg under Marc Albrecht. In February 2008 he makes his debut with Washington DC's National Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin.
A keen chamber musician, Gautier Capuçon recently undertook a tour of Italy in a trio with Katia Labèque and Victoria Mullova, while his other chamber partners include Martha Argerich (with whom he made a tour of Japan), Daniel Barenboim, Yuri Bashmet, Gérard Caussé, Myung-Whun Chung, Hélène Grimaud, Stephen Kovacevich, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Lilya Zilberstein and the Ysaÿe Quartet. His closest musical relationship is with his violinist brother Renaud, with whom he notably made a critically acclaimed US recital tour. He has also given solo recitals across Europe, and appears regularly at major European music festivals.
Gautier's recordings for Virgin Classics include Haydn Cello Concertos with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under Daniel Harding, and with Renaud a number of works by Brahms – the Double Concerto (with the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and Myung-Whun Chung), Clarinet Quintet and Trios, the Ravel Trio, Schubert's 'Trout' Quintet, Face à face and Inventions (both albums of duos) and a hugely popular version of Saint-Saëns' Carnaval des animaux. January 2008 brings the release of cello sonatas by Prokofiev & Rachmaninov with pianist Gabriela Montero.
Gautier Capuçon plays a 1701 Matteo Goffriler cello and a 1746 Joseph Contreras loaned to him by BSI SA Lugano.
