조진주, 바이올린
1988년 대한민국 서울에서 태어난 바이올리니스트 조진주는 현재 북남미와 유럽, 한국에서 활발하게 활동 중이다. 11세에 한국예술종합학교 예비학교 입학(이성주 사사), 이후 예원학교 수석입학 (김경민), 1년 반 재학 중 도미하여 Paul Kantor를 사사하며 클리브랜드 음악대학 영 아티스트 프로그램을 거쳤다. 이어 커티스 음대에 입학, 학사과정 1년 재학 중 다시 클리브랜드 음대로 돌아가 2010년 학사과정을 마친 이후 동일 학교에서 석사과정 중이다.
유학 직후 조진주는 미국 5대 오케스트라 중 하나로 손꼽히는 클리브랜드 오케스트라와 데뷔 무대에 섰으며, 아스펜 음악제 콩쿠르 1위와 함께 부상으로 주어진 피터 운지안와 협연 무대에 섰으며, 스툴버그 현악 국제콩쿠르에서 금메달을 받았다. 2006년 조진주는 17세의 나이로 몬트리올 국제 음악 콩쿠르에서 현지 언론의 찬사를 받으며 우승과 함께 관중상 또한 거머쥐었고 이후 2010년 부에노스아이레스 국제 바이올린 콩쿠르 1위와 오케스트라 상, 그리고 2011년 윤이상 국제 콩쿠르 2위를 수상하며 활동 범위를 넓혀가고 있다. 또한 도로시 딜레이 상을 수상하며 아스펜 음악제 정규 프로그램 중 하나로 쇼스타코비치 협주곡을 연주 하는 등 활약을 더하고 있다. 클리브랜드, 몬트리올 심포니, 퀘벡 심포니 등 크고 작은 북미의 오케스트라와 협연하고 Kent Nagano, Michael Stern, James Gaffigan, Alexander Mikelthwate, Anton Nel, Robert McDuffie, Anita Pontremoli 등 정상급 지휘자, 연주자와 함께 유럽, 북미, 남미, 한국 등지에서의 무대를 이끌어가고 있다.
특히 루이빌에 켄터키 센터에서는 일주일 간 조진주를 초청하여 Musician-in-Residence을 역임하고 학생들의 레슨, 실내악 코칭 등 교육 프로그램과 독주회를 책임지게 하였고, 이 연주는 현지 언론이 뽑은 지난 10년간의 최고 연주 리스트에 선정되었다. 08/09 시즌에는 캐나다 음악 협회 요청으로 3개월 간 전 캐나다 투어를 성공리에 마친 바 있다. 2011년 여름의 전 남미 투어 또한 현지 언론의 찬사와 함께 끝마쳤다.
실내악과 오케스트라, 현대음악 앙상블에도 열정적인 조진주는 클리브랜드 청소년 오케스트라 악장으로 선발되어 4년 간 그룹을 이끌었고, 그 밖에도 Wo-Men String Quartet 바이올리니스트, 첼리스트 죠슈아 로만과 워싱턴 케네디 센터에서 연주활동을 펼쳤다. 또한 제이미 라레도가 이끄는 뉴욕 스트링 오케스트라 세미나에서 이례적으로 2년간 연이어 악장을 맡으며 카네기 홀에서 연주한 바 있다.
조진주는 자선공연, 기부/교육 프로그램 등 콘서트 홀 밖에서의 음악활동에 가장 적극적으로 참여하고 있다. 조선일보가 주최한 '우리동네 콘서트' 시리즈, 국립 소록도 병원에서 자선 연주 등을 열고 클리브랜드 음악대학 자선공연 시리즈에 정기적으로 참여하는 등 재능기부의 확산을 위해 애쓰고 있다. 2011년 5월에는 본격적으로 아티스트 재능기부 커뮤니티 '별빛'을 만들어 '하나를 위한 음악재단'과 함께 대한민국 곳곳에서 아티스트의 교류와 재능기부를 확산하기 위한 노력을 거듭하고 있다. 또한 조진주는 가수 서태지의 곡을 직접 편곡, 밴드와 함께 아마추어 오케스트라를 지휘/연주하거나 마이클 잭슨의 곡들을 편곡하여 금호아트홀 초청연주 프로그램에 삽입하는 등 여러 가지를 시도 중이며, 사진작가 강영호가 예술감독으로 작업한 김혜수 출연 휘슬러 광고음악을 녹음하기도 하였다.
최근에는 무라카미 하루키, 은희경, 밀란 쿤데라의 작품들을 읽고 서태지와 검정치마, 자우림에 열광하며 미니홈피와 얼굴책을 열심히 관리하는 20대의 생활을 영위하고 있다.
JinJoo Cho, Violin
Jinjoo Cho, violin, is the First Prize and Orchestra Award winner of the 2010 Buenos Aires International Violin Competition, First Grand Prize and People's Choice Award winner of the 2006 Montreal International Musical Competition, Second Prize winner of the 2011 Isang Yun Competition, and the gold medalist of the 2005 Stulberg International String Competition. She has appeared as soloist with The Cleveland Orchestra, the Montreal, Quebec, Winnipeg and Victoria Symphony Orchestras, the Seoul Philharmonic, Kalamazoo Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, CityMusic Cleveland, l’Orchestre de Chambre I Musici de Montreal, and Aspen Concert Orchestra collaborating with such renowned artists as Robert McDuffie, Michael Stern, Peter Oundjian, Kent Nagano, Steven Smith, Anton Nel, Muhai Tang and James Gaffigan.
She has served as an Artist-in-Residence at the Kentucky Center for Performing Arts, and regularly appears on recital series in Cleveland, Montreal, Seoul, Munich and New York. Recent performances include three Canadian recital tours with pianist Louise-Andree Baril, and recitals in Germany, Korea, Canada and the U.S.
A dedicated orchestral and chamber musician, Jinjoo was a member of the Wo-Men String Quartet. The group coached with Peter Salaff and the Cavani quartet and participated in masterclasses with Donald Weilerstein, Arnold Steinhardt and the Pacifica and Takacs String Quartets.
A native of Seoul, South Korea, Jinjoo is a graduate of Yewon Art School and the Korean National University of Arts, Pre-College. After her move to the United States in 2002, she graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music Young Artist Program and worked toward a Bachelor's Degree at the Curtis Institute of Music. Jinjoo continues her Bachelor's Degree studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Paul Kantor, who has been her teacher and mentor since 2001.
